Dear Sharif

Thank you for making me aware of your Nile View series. Please keep me on your mailing list. I attended an EMCIS conference in Cairo about 15 years ago. My Jordanian husband who had always want to visit Egypt came with me and we had a wonderful time. This was the last time we travelled together as he was developing early onset Dementia and I became his carer until he passed away 10 years ago. My experience as a carer inspired my interest in the isolation of seniors, carers and other groups who have become digitally excluded. As I retire from my academic career at the University of Wollongong in Australia, I have created an organisation “Living Connected” which for several years has been helping such isolated citizens get the digital capability to stay connected virtually. We created a network of volunteers along the NSW coast south of Sydney, a distance of about 400km, who help people to learn to use digital devices to maintain their independence and engaged with community. Before the COVID19 virus struck, this area had suffered with drought and many homes were destroyed by horrendous bushfire in the small villages of the area. With the restrictions that have come with COVID19, we are now distributing refurbished laptops and tablets to those who need them and providing help virtually via video sessions. There is now a greater awareness that everyone needs to be, and can learn to be, digitally included. All citizens, including the disadvantaged, now need to know how to access information and services online as well as maintain social connections for their well-being. Our experience demonstrates the capability of digital technology to overcome the “tyranny of distance” that a big, sparsely-populated country like Australia. I hope that you can include this message in you Nile View.

Best Wishes

Prof Helen Hasan, Wollongong

I’m so glad you have mentioned Fintech and financial inclusion. International financial institutions all over the world are warning about lack of liquidity and financial inclusion and Fintech could be one of the answers. Thank you dear Prof. for a great read.

Very well written. In the ambiguity we face now, we can only be “cautiously optimistic”.

Interesting read professor Sherif! Higher education is definetly not the same post the pandemic! The online pedagogy will be different and I believe we need to have a new teaching and learning framework! At least this is what I am hoping my current research will lead too!

Best
